Tough Crowd

Tough Crowd

Tough Crowd is a short film about the day-to-day life of a busker, made as my final project at Gloucestershire College. With no production budget, I led the project from idea to final edit, supported by one collaborator on camera and audio. It was a chance to take ownership of a complete film and find out how far a small production could go.

My role

I handled the concept, planning, producing, directing and editing, with one collaborator supporting camera and audio. It was a fairly compact credits list. Taking on those responsibilities meant keeping track of the overall story while dealing with the details needed to get it made.

Process

I developed the film around a busker’s everyday life and planned the production around the people and equipment available. I then directed the shoot with camera and audio support, before bringing the footage together and shaping the final piece in the edit.

Reflections

A £0 budget makes you think carefully about what matters. This project taught me to match an idea to the resources available and take responsibility for carrying it through. It also gave me a better understanding of how preparation affects the choices you have later in the edit.
