Not Just Black and White explores the significance of the keffiyeh in the context of Palestine. Made through the BFI Film Academy documentary programme, it brought our team together to develop and deliver a short film in one week. I worked across assistant directing, camera and editing, with my biggest contribution coming in the edit, where the material began to find its shape.

My role
I worked as assistant director, camera operator and editor within the production team. Editing became my main contribution, shaping the structure and rhythm of the film and considering how each decision affected the audience’s understanding of its subject.
Process
Across the one-week production, I supported filming before bringing the material together in the edit. I worked through selection, sequencing and pacing, looking for a clear progression while remaining attentive to the meaning and context of the footage.
Reflections
This project deepened my interest in the edit as a place where a film’s meaning takes shape. Working quickly made every choice more deliberate. It also reinforced the responsibility involved in documentary work: a small change in structure can have a significant effect on what an audience takes away.
